Why doesn’t Cottee get the respect he deserves by our fans?

Great player for us, Di canio has god like status as so many more that gave us less than Cottee.

For me one of the best goal scorers we’ve had. Deserves almost legend status.

He had his D.M boots in the museum when it was in back in the hammers shop at Upton Park from 75 sprayed with claret and blue .
He got a very dull very personality
against likes of McAvennie or Ward who people warm to very easily.
Just gave nothing when he was on sky.

Think he went to Selangor before returning to Leicester but definitely think he left us to early,.

Understood he had to leave first time around but definitely think he went to the wrong Club. Everton played quite long to Graeme Sharp if I remember rightly and had played that way with Andy Gray and later Duncan Ferguson so I don't think it suited Cottee. I think Arsenal would probably had been a better fit.

He might have ended up there with McAvennie as Arsenal were in for him when he came back in 88.

As well as the 81 team the 85/86 team were great to watch. Such a shame half of McAvennie and Cottee's goals are lost to history because there was a TV strike and West Ham only started their own video coverage in around October/November I think.

TC was a lovely little striker, should have got more than just 7 England caps.

With hindsight we sold him too early as Leicester got a good couple of years out of him in his early 30s.

Neal Maupay at Brighton is a similar style of striker and has the same short and stocky build. Not as good though obviously.

The boys of 86 was a wonderful team to watch big Phil along with Tonka, Reg and Stretch were solid at the back. Pace, movement and vision in the midfield from Dev, Dickens and Wardy and of course 50 odd goals from Frankie and TC. We should have won the league that season and probably would have done if the weather hadn't been as bad as it was and we didn't have to play the last 10 games in around 29 days. We were tho short of a couple of players a quality left back and midfielder. We should have strengthened but sadly we didn't and the rest is history.

Eerie,

the difference with Brooking was that he played for us in an era where we were winning trophies and getting to European finals. Plus Ron Greenwood was England manager when we did get relegated and promised him his England career wouldn’t be affected by playing in the second division.

Le Tissier was the exception rather than the norm.

he is died in the wool west ham, as I said, I saw him at away games with dolan (both, who were playing with other clubs at the time). it's funny you mention le tissier, even be admitted in one of those golf with tubes videos that he would no doubt have got more england caps if he'd made the move to chelsea or one of the other more fashionable/FA friendly clubs. not that it did TC any more favours as he only got 7 caps

Yes, I understand all that, I'm not thick. However, he talks and acts like he is absolutely died in the wool West Ham, and considering we were still a top level club, it's a bit weird to fuck off and leave us in the lurch if you're THAT West Ham.

Plenty of examples from that era of players not moving to other clubs because of their love for their club. Sir Trev, Le Tissier just off the bat.

The 85/86 season got off to a modest start and the players themselves weren't happy with the way things were going. They had their own meeting without John Lyall and thrashed a few things out. Almost immediately things improved.

Speaking of Frank, he was in a recent twitter conversation with Chris Kamara where they were in agreement that the broken ankle was just an accident and there had never been any ill feeling and that the paper talk about legal action was just made up.

TC & Macca got along fine they were just different characters and led different lifestyles.

Don’t forget as well that in 85/86 Cottee was still only 20 years old while Macca was 26.

They have both told the story that the News of the World released a story saying the players had a bust up and weren’t talking to each other and on the same day that came out they were playing Golf together!

It’s very easy for us as lifetime supporters with standard jobs to say that we love West Ham so much that if we ever had the opportunity to play for them we would never want to leave and play for another club but that’s not reality.

Lots of factors come into being a football player and loyalty comes after Money and ambition regardless of how much you love/supported a club.

Don’t forget as well that footballers weren’t earning fortunes in the 80s like they do now so moving to a better club back then would have a huge difference on their lifestyle and families with signing on fees and increased wages. Not like now where if you play for any premiership club for a few years you are pretty much set up for life.

I don't think there was a problem between them. They just were different and weren't best mates. Probably a good thing that TC didn't get led into the lifestyle Frank was leading.

I think we've all fantasized about playing for West Ham and being a 600 game one club man. So when someone comes through the ranks who is known to be a big fan and is obviously a major talent, but who decides he is too good for the club, naturally there will be some resentment. At least Lampard was put in an untenable position and had to go.

Just because you love the club doesn’t mean you can’t have ambition and let’s face it he wasn’t going to achieve much staying at West Ham.

He said he got frustrated that the club didn’t push on after the 85/86 season. We just went back to trying to avoid relegation again.

He wanted to challenge for trophies and establish himself in the England squad.

McAvennie was also sold and the club was just relying on Cottee’s goals to keep us up. When he did leave the inevitable happened and we did go down.

If we were ambitious and wanted to push on in 1986 then I’m pretty sure he.would have stayed.
